What Is Urethane?

Urethane describes three distinct substances: ethyl carbamate, carbamate, and polyurethane. Urethane, on its own, appears as a white crystal-like substance with no distinct smell or odor. It can be used in liquid and solid form and is highly malleable, making it an excellent candidate for a variety of uses.

Urethane, however, is used more commonly as an adhesive, coating, or sealant. It is also widely used in fungicides and pesticides. It can be found in plastics and dyes and was even used as anesthesia at one point in time. Its primary function now is in the electrical and automotive industries, building and construction, apparel, and packaging with the biggest customers in the agricultural, mining, and manufacturing industries.

Ethyl Carbamate

Ethyl carbamate usually comes in a crystal-white powder form. It is an organic compound that is most commonly used to synthesize pharmaceuticals or pesticides, and it is known to dissolve easily in water.

Carbamate

Carbamate, which is also called Urethane, is most commonly used in pesticides and is less toxic than other pesticides. Carbamate is often used in various pesticides due to its ability to break down. It is generally used as a spray or bait, and it kills insects by affecting their brains and nervous systems.

As a leading urethane supplier, you can count on our custom polyurethane coatings, sheets, and liners to protect your equipment.

Polyurethane very generally:

Polyurethane can most easily be thought of as the middle child between plastic and rubber; it combines traits from both materials to create a product that is uniquely useful. Polyurethane, very generically speaking, is a mixture of two (or more) liquid chemicals, a prepolymer and a curative, that when combined at the proper ratio and temperatures produce a chemical reaction resulting in a solid finished product. There are thousands of variations to this process to create the desired characteristics of the finished product.

When looking for a urethane supplier/products it’s good to be aware of what additives are being used. Numerous additives can also be introduced to polyurethane to change its appearance and characteristics. Additives can be as simple as pigment added to change the color and as complex as graphite, fiberglass, Kevlar, ceramic chips, etc. to improve various different characteristics. One of the most common variants of polyurethane is its durometer or hardness. Polyurethane can be cast as soft as a 20 Shore A (ex.: rubber band) up to a 90 Shore D (ex.: nylon, military combat helmet). This is one of the first things a manufacturer will ask for when replacing a polyurethane part or when looking for urethane products.

Uses:
